“This afternoon Pech here, with our soli, practicing their part in the Beethoven Mass to end of Qui tollis. It is more lucid than the choral work. The Gratia agimus is positively melodic & agreeable. I hope we may not prove to have been presumptuous & over-ambitious in undertaking this Mass. From Mozart’s no. 12 to Beethoven no. 2 is an immense distance to be traversed between 1870 & 1872.”
