“With Ellie to Trinity Chapel Schoolhouse tonight for C. M. A. rehearsal (Pech was drilling his soli here this afternoon)—Mass from Cum Sancto Spiritu to end of Et vitam, and then the Benedictus. By far the most satisfactory evening yet devoted to this very formidable work. Soli & chorus did extremely well. Chorus greatly helped & sustained by two clarionets & two bassoons that kept the voices right. I see more & more of the grandeur & depth of this Mass—dimly & by slow degrees. We shall probably find that it must be illuminated by the orchestra before it can be fully understood, & that it is, in fact, an orchestral work with choral accompaniment.”
