“Church was jammed full, standing room & all, long before service began. Morgan & Messiter had gotten together an orchestra from outside the Musical Protective Union (some of whose members were so disgusted with the attempt to extort money from the church last Thursday, that they resigned & appeared in the organ loft yesterday). It was an excellent orchestra. Morgan’s ‘Introit’ ‘Open are the gates of righteousness’ was not bad, but he must possess immense ‘cheek,’ or self-appreciation, to parade himself beside Mozart! The Mozart music (Mass no. 2) was most lovely (we had it last Christmas)—& his motett no. 3 magnificent—but one could not help constantly expecting some familiar phrase from Leporello or the Don—‘Signori Maskere!’ or the like. With us were the three boys—Dick [Richard Henry Derby]—Miss Rosalie [Ruggles]—Mr. & Mrs. John Sherwood…I shall surely dream of Beethoven’s marvelous harmonies tonight.”
