“C. M. A. rehearsal last night at Trinity Chapel Schoolhouse. Soli present & chorus full. Among the chorus—at least among its ladies—are many malingerers—who shirk all work, & emit their most sweet voices only at long intervals. (Edmund is sorely exercised about them.) Hence many orgasms of wrath & desperation on the part of Pech, who danced with fury now & then, tore his hair, & all but rent his garments. Don’t wonder but he might to keep his temper a little better, & not be so rough & harsh. The defaulters are inexcusable, of course, & we must cut them off this season if we can. But Pech should remember that this Mass would probably be found hard work by a chorus of the seraphim. Mass from ‘Crucifixus’ to Finale. Wonderful music. Notable affinities to the 9th symphony in the Dona pacem.”
