“Extra C. M. A. rehearsal last evening at Schoolhouse of Trinity Chapel. Et vitam—Benedictus—Agnus & finale of the Mass; also the Lorelei. An encouraging rehearsal. Even the stern Pech pronounced the practice ‘very good,’ & smiled upon the chorus as sweetly as an eupeptic ogre. No use writing any more about the Mass till we hear its orchestra. But certain of its points (e.g. the accompaniments to the Et vitam) already give one that tingling or thrilling sensation, which can be excited only by Beethoven’s best style of work. Tonight’s Post mentions production of this work as a ‘great music event’—& a subject for ‘national pride.’ If our chorus do not break down & disgrace us, I shall be satisfied.”
