“Hence the Whitsunday service at Trinity Church was not over-crowded. Mrs. Jacob Little sat with us. She returned the other day, after six years abroad, & is very nice. Service was the same as that of Ascension Day, except that the offertory was Mozart’s delightful motett no. 3, & the closing voluntary the finale of Beethoven’s C minor symphony. All most satisfactory, except that the orchestra sometimes rode down the voices too remorselessly. Morgan Dix preached—fairly. I begin to rank Gounod rather high. The Sanctus of his Messe solennelle is certainly among the finest things extant of its kind. Perhaps it is of a low kind, but it is most effective & telling. The final voluntary was like a series of electric shocks. The C minor symphony in Trinity Church!!! Could I have foreseen this amazing phenomenon—(& Haydn & Mozart executed there with a tolerable orchestra) twenty years ago, it would have brightened all my subsequent life.”
