“First orchestral rehearsal, C. M. A. at Steinway. Quartette, Mrs. Gulager, Miss Antonia Henne, Leggat & Remmertz. Programme: Sterndale Bennett’s overture, ‘Die Naiaden,’ pretty & elaborate, Mendelssohn’s very picturesque ‘Walpurgis Nacht,’ and Haydn’s Mass no. 3, in the Qui tollis whereof Remmertz was grand. The whole Mass was delightful to hear. Horsley is as athletic a conductor as Pech & he is better liked by the chorus (& was very cordially received by the orchestra)—his lights & shadows are even better marked than Pech’s, but I don’t think his ‘attack’ quite so sharp & crisp. Ellie sat with me, having declined further service in the chorus.”
