“Evening service & Trinity—& their rehearsal of the Christmas music—viz., a choral introit, working up the melody of Adeste fidelis very gracefully & nearly the whole of Hummel’s Mass in E-flat. I say nothing of the orchestral finale, a rubbishy movement from a ‘symphony’ by Morgan the saffron-hued—the Maestro of the Bilious Countenance. The Mass seems very solid & handsome, & the rehearsal was much less bad than usual. Some members of the orchestra were absent, so Johny & Temple took the first ‘cello & oboe parts, & did their little solo passages, at eight, & very handsomely, I thought.”
