“First public rehearsal for 2nd concert of C. M. A. at Steinway 3 p.m. Sat with Ellie, Lucy [Derby], & nice little Miss Ida Cushman. Spohr’s ‘Last Judgment’ was charmingly rendered. It is far clearer & finer than I supposed. Its production is a mistake, but perhaps not a grave one. I had heard it but once & that was years ago (December 21, 1846).

Strange how certain phrases come back to me, as if heard in some other life, & some other world. It is a most elegant piece of workmanship. The contrasts & combinations of soli & chorus are most artistically managed—e. g. in ‘Hail our Redeemer!’ & ‘Blessed are the departed.’”
