“With Ellie, Lucy [Derby], & Temple 3:15 p.m. at Edmund Schermerhorn’s, for the first of his new series of afternoon concerts. Rietzel succeeds the pseudo-oxonian Pech as conductor. Orchestra about 18, picked Philharmonickers, such as Matzka, Boehm, Sohst, Schussel. Bergner & Ohlemann. Audience about 50, nice people, & remarkably sympathetic. Programme was (1) Overture to Oberon (2) Beethoven’s quartette, op. 74, no. 1 (3) Duo for horn & flute, with orchestra (quite nice) (4) Kreutzer Nachtlager am Grenada overture, brilliant & pretty (5) Violin solo with orchestra, Benno Walther (he plays with spirit & fire), Andante, ‘God preserve the Emperor Francis’ from Haydn’s quartette & (6) an orchestral fantasia on phrases from ‘the Huguenots.’ Altogether a most satisfactory afternoon.”
