“After dinner to Trinity Chapel Schoolhouse for C. M. A. rehearsal. Great crowd. Heard Weber’s Mass in G for the first time & minus the soli. It is not at all deep, but it is lovely & will be liked. Suggestions of Freyschütz & Oberon pervade it. I think the Dona pacem is a modification of ‘Through the forest,’ or I am sure a phrase from the overture to Oberon, & a most lovely phrase, occurs early in the Gloria. Weber’s wild, game-flavored style employed on the musical interpretation of a church-office is an interesting novelty.”
