“This afternoon to 1st C. M. A. choral rehearsal—Steinway. Chorus out in force, notwithstanding the storm [downpour all day]; audience scanty, but attentive & warm. The Mass, with the solo parts, is most sunshiny & melodic & will be understood by everyone. The Weber flavor is strong through it all. The Walpurgis-Nacht followed, & was beautifully rendered. It’s a fine work, but I cannot get up much enthusiasm over it.”
