“To 1st public rehearsal of C. M. A. (2nd concert) this p.m. I hope I shall like Schumann’s Mass better when I know it better. Doubtless I shall, but it seemed most ponderous this afternoon. It is all choral. From the Sanctus to the end, I saw gleams of light, but the earlier movements were—to me—dull, unmelodic, monotonous & meaningless. Gade’s graceful & pretty cantata (Erl King’s daughter) was most refreshing after this dry & dreary composition. It is founded on the fine old ballad in the Wunderhorn—a great old favorite of mine [Quote from the German text].

What a nice subject for a picture—the dark Norse pine forest, & the young Jarl riding up his horse as the weird lovely forms come dancing & floating toward him.”
