“C. M. A. rehearsal—orchestral, 3 p.m. Full attendance, though the streets are so bad. Weber’s dear old magnificent Jubel overture, unheard for many years, was delightful. Thirty years ago, George Christian Anthon used to pitch into me for incessantly whistling or humming one of its melodic phrases. It is improbable now that he will ever do anything of the kind again. I have not seen him for six months. Schumann’s Mass, even with orchestra, seems to me lifeless—though learned, classical & ecclesiastical. ‘Erl-Königs Tochter’ is lovely, when lit up by Gade’s charming instrumentation.”
