“At Trinity Church 4 p.m. for rehearsal of Easter music. The church was quite full. Temple & his oboe in organ loft. First movement of Beethoven’s D symphony (for final voluntary)—anthem (from Handel’s Saul) ‘How excellent thy name O Lord’—offertory, 12th Chandos anthem, ‘O praise the Lord, ye angels of his.’ The rest of the music from Mozart’s beautiful 1st Mass. Rehearsal was pretty rough, but not so rough as some rehearsals I have known. The Handel compositions are more interesting than I expected, but so dry, chippy, & full of meaningless, florid, old-fashioned vocalization as to be out of place.”
