“C. M. A. rehearsal yesterday went fairly well, but in my present mood I don’t much enjoy music or anything else.”

“Horsley, Rev. Cooke, Ben Stephens, & I, executive committee of C. M. A., met at my office this afternoon, & an unexpected piece of news came out, to wit, that if we go on with the 3rd concert & its rehearsals, we shall be saddled with a deficit of $1000.00 & upwards. Stephens the treasurer ought to have told us this a month ago. The trouble is that so many of our subscribers (‘our best people’) have neglected to pay their subscriptions, though often requested so to do. We must send out a circular tomorrow, announcing that there will be no rehearsal Tuesday, and stating the reason why. I am sorry the C. M. A. should die thus ignominiously, but I can afford to pay no more money to meet its deficits. And I don’t think any of us need feel ashamed of having depended on subscriptions from men like Mr. Charles C. Dodge, which they have failed to meet. However that may be, I’ll have nothing more to do with musical societies.”

“Conference with Rev. Cooke & Ben Stephens de rebus C. M. A. & decided that by snipping off expenses & by selling our library for whatever it will bring, we can much reduce our deficit. So we suppressed the circular I had drafted, thus sparing ourselves a deep mortification at a cost that I trust will not prove serious.”
