“C. M. A. rehearsal this p.m. Haydn’s 16th Mass is celestial—no, that’s not quite accurate. It’s an embodiment of human feeling raised high up toward heaven. The Gloria—Gratias agimus—Quoniam—Et vitam—Sanctus & Benedictus take one off one’s feet altogether. As for Athalie—it’s strong & good, but Mendelssohn in oratorio & cantata never rises (me judice) above an exalted grade of respectability. How people round me did whisper & talk & tattle!”
