“To Trinity Church this afternoon for rehearsal of tomorrow’s music…Gounod’s Mass (as usual on Ascension Day)—anthem, Psalm 98. Mendelssohn. Offertory, Barnby. It was a promising rehearsal. Gounod’s Mass is perhaps rather sentimental & melodramatic, but I like it better every time I hear it. The Sanctus is lovely, beyond question. Cooke sang the solo.”
