“An attractive concert was given at Steinway Hall last evening, in aid of the Home for Christian Care. The programme was interpreted by Mmes. Henry Butman and J. M. Davidson, Messrs. Pattison and Simpson, and an orchestra. We have seldom heard so fine an interpretation of ‘Bel Raggio,’ by an amateur, as that of Mrs. Butman. We confess to some astonishment at the lady’s division of the words in the first two phrases of the aria, and cannot say that we admire her trill nearly so much as her choice of Dr. Ganz’s ‘a Nightingale’s Trill’ as a response to an encore would indicate that she does, but if Mrs. Butman can sing most compositions with the fine tone of voice and the rare fluency, brilliancy and accuracy of execution noticeable in the Rossinian morceau, we would willingly exchange many professionals against her. Mrs. Davidson also sings with taste and precision, but the selection of ‘O Mio Fernando’ was not particularly happy, for the higher register of the lady’s voice is unquestionably the best.”
