“Loafed about Trinity Church. Tested chimes. Meneely’s new bell won’t do. Its tones suggest a summons to dinner rather than to prayer.

Rehearsal for Christmas music at 3:30 p.m. Did not stay it through. Mostly Schubert’s Mass in E-flat. Offertory—very long—Bach, which I fled. First allegro of Mozart’s B-flat symphony for final voluntary—not at all appropriate. Also ‘Gloria Tibi,’ which made me jump, for it was part of the dearly beloved Kyrie of Haydn’s 1st Mass, whereof the leading phrase has been my pet of pets for thirty years, and which I never heard with orchestra. If the shade of dear old Joseph Haydn will pardon the criticism, it is certainly fitter for a Gloria than for a Kyrie.”
