“Yesterday afternoon, at the seventeenth organ concert at Holy Trinity Church, Mr. Henry Carter was the performer. The programme consisted of compositions for the organ, and arrangements from the orchestral works of the great masters. Probably the most effective of the former were the adagio from Mendelssohn’s sonata in C minor, and the sonata in A minor by Ritter, and of the latter the brilliant triumphant finale from Beethoven’s C minor symphony. Madame Salvotti sang Mendelssohn’s celebrated ‘Hear, ye Israel’ and ‘I am He that Comforteth,’ from the ‘Elijah,’ and a ‘Preghiera’ by Donizetti. Her large and powerful voice, which is particularly strong and full in the high notes, was displayed to great advantage in each.”
