“…The musical part of the service was very grand. Mr. Gustavus Schmitz presided at the organ and Mr. Henry Schmitz was the conductor. The choir numbered forty voices, the principal singers being Mme. Bredelli and Mrs. F. H. Grosz, soprano; Mrs. Ellenrich, alto; Mr. Bersin, tenor; and Mr. Urchs, basso. The mass sung was Haydn’s second. It was rendered by the choir in masterly style. Mrs. Ellenrich sang the ‘Veni Creator’ after the Gospel had been read and at the offertory Mme. Bredelli sang exquisitely and with great expression Mercadante’s ‘Quam delecta.’ At the elevation Mrs. Grosz sang the ‘Ecce Panis,’ by Proch, being accompanied by Mr. Henry Schmitz on the French horn. This was the most delectable piece in the musical service and was rendered with splendid effect.”
