“Evening service at Trinity Church & then rehearsal of Easter music. Anthem, ‘Sing O ye heavens,’ Handel. Opening free broad & handsome, followed by a good arid fugue. Gloria Tibi, Kyrie of Haydn no. 1—lovely. Offertory, ‘O be joyful in the Lord,’ V. Lachner—not bad. Credo, Sanctus, Agnus, & Gloria, Schubert—good, but not very fresh or effective. Final voluntary, 1st movement of Mozart’s Jupiter, which Carter takes about twice too fast. Not an unpromising rehearsal.”
