“The Männergesangverein ‘Arion’ had yesterday evening in its hall the first concert for the 1874–’75 season. The concert attracted such a large audience that the limited space of the hall was barely sufficient to accommodate it. The choruses performed by the club were definitely the best part of the concert. Two Mendelssohn compositions; Schuberth’s ‘Wehmuth;’ a Scottish folk song by Dr. Damrosch, which quite happily strikes just the right tone for a folksong; a lively and fresh original composition by Rheinberger, which bears the title ‘Mucker und Schlucker;’ and Abt’s not entirely unknown ‘Maiennact,’ were sung by the society with rare confidence, precision, beautiful expression, and nuance. The violinist Herr H. Brandt and the tenor Herr Wm. Bischoff (who has a wonderful voice but sometimes sings quite ‘wildly’) made a sensation with their solos, while the female singer, who made her concert debut, had to be content with a hardly deserved Aufstands-Erfolge.”
