“Matilda Heron revived her version of ‘East Lynne’ last evening. The audience was quite large and very much pleased. Miss Heron depicts a character as an artist paints a panorama – with bright, broad and heavy colors, and with the lights very light and the shadows very dark. This generally takes with a mixed audience, however much it may offend the hypercritical. Upon such occasions we always console ourselves with the reflection that we must have all sorts of actresses in the world, and that if Miss Heron were anybody else or anybody better she would not be herself. It is our duty to warn her, nevertheless, against those evident and increasing defects of elocution and gesticulation which mar her happiest efforts and invite the severest criticism. Next week Miss Heron will give up her nights – Wednesday and Saturday – to Mr. Grau’s new troupe of operatic artists.”
