“The play has been considerably abbreviated and improved, and now goes very smoothly from first to last. The musical portion of the entertainment should not be unnoticed. Vestvali sings several songs admirably. The poetry of the songs is not up to the mark, however, except that of the ‘Lullaby,’ in act third, which we did not hear the first night, and which certainly is not ‘as rough as a hand saw.’ Mr. Stoepel’s music is capital—the barcarole especially.”
