Laura Keene: Born in England in 1830. “Made her debut at the Olympic Theatre, London, in October, 1851, as Pauline in ‘The Lady of Lyons.’ Crossed the Atlantic in 1852, and was engaged by Manager Wallack for his theatre on Broadway, New York, where she made her debut September 20th, of the same year. . . . In 1855, [after traveling], she arrived in New York and opened the Metropolitan Theatre, as ‘Laura Keene’s Varieties.’ . . . Mr. Jno. [sic] W. Trimble, who at once commenced the erection of a new theatre expressly for Miss Keene, which was opened November 18, 1856. . . . She continued manageress [sic] of this establishment until the summer of 1863, when she retired from the management and went on a starring tour. . . . Miss Keene possesses considerable personal attractions; a pretty and expressive face, fine figure, and a voice remarkable for its sweetness and flexibility.”
A.H. Davenport: Born in Stamford, CT., in August 1831. Made his debut in Baltimore in November 1848. Became a lawyer circa 1851. Joined Charley White’s Varieties at one point.
