“It seems as though the farce as a genre – with its sense of ‘frilly nonsense’ – has become quite popular and, thus, is found in the repertoire of the Stadt Theater more frequently as of late. We consider the farce Der fliegende Holländer, which was performed last night and the night before, as belonging to the realm of ‘higher sillyness.’ It does not matter, however, because it is entertaining and possesses wit in some parts. Mr. Stiegmann has arranged pretty choruses and couplets, and the sold out house last night is proof that it boosts business for the Stadt Theater. The performance was good, the performers passable and well received. Frankly, we would prefer to say farewell to this style of entertainment rather soon.”
