"Mr. Gottschalk's Performance at the Sacre Cœur.—Mr. Gottschalk with a party of gentlemen, introduced by the Rev. Dr. Cummings, attended the Sacre Cœur, school for young ladies, beyond the Central Park, and entertained them in his customary liberal manner with a complimental [sic] performance of some six of his best pieces—performing in the grand hall of the stately buildings, where about 250 young ladies were assembled to hear him. Whether applause is taught in the copious syllabus of the institution under the direction of Madame Hardy, we know not; but after the first tremors of maidenly [illeg.] had died the death of all things this side of heaven, the 250 young beauties clapped their hands as vigorously as if the celestial Sisters had put them through two quarters of claque tuition. The girls were all delighted, and we appprehend [sic] there was monstrous little study done that blessed day. After the performance two charming young girls, who were the seniors of the senior class, came forward radient [sic] with what in ante-Revolutionary times was called the bel sir—and now is y'cl[illeg.] the distingué—and with the manner of a pair of duchesses thanked the eminent artist for the honor he had done them."
