“The French Theatre is opening its present season with a spirit and success which reflect credit on the judicious enterprise of M. Juignet, and prove that in New York, where a greater number of nationalities are represented than in almost any other metropolis in the world, the best dramatic productions of France, if worthily represented, will infallibly meet full appreciation and ensure adequate patronage. On Saturday evening Scribe’s exquisite little vaudeville, ‘La Chanoinesse’ . . . attracted a crowded audience. . . . The afterpiece, ‘Mon Isménie,’ was, if possible, still more successful.”
