“Heard the Haydn symphony again (it is numbered 3 on the programme). It is Lovely! In spite of my stupefying cold I appreciated it intensely. It was like a walk through awakening fields & pleasant wood paths in June, with Johnny and Temple in their highest feather. . . . I suppose musical critics would call the delicious phrases of the first movement of the trio tame and childish—insipid—trivial. But nobody can write such things now. In one sense they certainly are childish—in their freshness and purity—so unlike anything that can be found in music of this day. Gade is the only living composer I know who tries to produce simple and beautiful musical thoughts. The grand object of all the rest seems to be to give an audience fits, which they don=t. Heard also one movement of a very grand violin concerto of Beethoven=s (op. 61, I think), and Dove sono badly sung by a Mrs. Rotter.”
