“The farewell ball of the 45th Regiment, which took place Sunday evening in the establishment of Messrs. Hillebrand & Weinberger, was extraordinarily well attended, leaving little room to dance, which was unfortunate, because the regiment’s band, under the direction of Mr. Oehl, played the most beautiful melodies. The commander of the regiment, Mr. Doebke, was present, as was Maj. Patton, the purser of the volunteer regiment. Mr. von Wratislaw and the other members of the welcoming committee decided to give escorts to the regiment next Thursday when they march forth. Capt. Blau of the 54th Regiment gave a long speech about the inner connection among the German volunteer regiments. Adjutant Horstmann did the honors. The conduct of the squad was exemplary.”
