Review: New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung und Herold, 22 December 1863, 8.
“The serenade for Mayor Günther, which had been postponed many times, was brought to him last night by the Ball Committee of the Fire Department. Grafula’s [sic] Band provided the music, which was excellent, as usual. Fourteenth Street was solidly filled with an enthusiastic throng. After the second piece, Mr. Günther came out onto the balcony, and gave a short speech, thanking the crowd for its tribute. The honor was paid to him as representative of the Ball Committee, and to the party which succeeded in wreaking havoc on a useless machine. He closed with an invitation to everyone to come to the governor’s mansion on New Year’s Day. The committee arranging the serenade honored Mrs. Günther with a basket of fresh flowers.”
