“Destruction of the Steubenhaus. Last night, around 11 o’clock a fire broke out in Kelsey and Cady’s smokehouse at 293 Bowery; caused by easily flammable materials. This building and the adjacent one, Steuben House, 291 Bowery, used by Sixtus Ludwig Kapff, were destroyed. Kelsey and Cady’s loss amounts to $35,000, which is partially insured. Mr. Kapff will lose $20,000.

The ball in progress was suddenly interrupted and the dancers had to leave their coats behind. The [other] adjacent building, No. 295, Reissmann and Kappes’ tobacco shop on the ground floor and Mrs. Smith and Lockhard’s boarding house above, suffered water damage. The apothecary at No. 289 had little damage.

On account of the late hour, our correspondent could not obtain details.”
