Review: New York Clipper, 12 December 1863, 275.

“Mrs. C.K. Fox’s new and original drama, written expressly for the Old Bowery Theatre, entitled ‘Jack Sheppard and His Dog,’ was produced at Old Drury for the first time on the evening of the 5th inst., to an immense house, the ticket office being closed at 8 o’clock, as the place was that full it couldn’t hold any more, and hundreds were obliged to be left out in the cold.  We have had Jack Sheppard on horseback and on foot, but the idea of introducing a dog as one of the principal characters is both novel and new. . . . Many of the most attractive and thrilling scenes were somewhat marred by Mr. Dog not minding his cues and sticking to the text; but taken all in all it has proved an immense and decided success. . . . [It] will hereafter rank among the standard dramas of the day.”

COMMENT: Lafayette and Thunder, the two dogs in the company, were trained by G.W. Thompson.  Lafayette was owned by “Engine Nine.”  Thunder was owned by G.L. Fox.  This according to NYC 12/05/63 or 12/12/63.
