Review: New York Clipper, 05 March 1864, 371.

“Mark Mudge, who is a very good judge, has given an opinion that the version of ‘Mazeppa,’ as produced by Bryants’ Minstrels, is a chef d’oeuvre [big thing.—ED] of artistic excellence. Mr. Mudge, from the many favorable opportunities he has had for instituting comparisons, is well qualified to decide the many complicated points involved in this great work of Byron’s and Bryants’, and were it not that Hank is a personal friend of the subscriber’s, we should say that a more unbiased, unprejudiced, and superflureous [sic] critic does not exist on this terrestrial planet. That the dark complected ‘Mazep.’ is recherche [bully boy.—ED] needs no endorsement from our ‘puerile pen.’ As proof of its great success, the managers announce that millions are unable to gain admittance. Our Jim says that’s true, because the hall won’t hold many millions.”
