Article: New York Clipper, 16 July 1864, 110.

Morris “died in this city on Wednesday, July 6, in the 63d year of his age. . . . Gen. Morris was born in Philadelphia, October 10, 1802. . . . As a song writer, however, rather than a journalist, Mr. Morris has acquired his chief reputation.  Of his ‘Woodman, Spare that Tree,’ several millions of copies are said to have been circulated. . . . [He] has edited a volume of ‘American Melodies,’ consisting of songs by upwards of 250 American writers. . . . [I]n 1842 he wrote the libretto of The Maid of Saxony, an opera set to music by Charles E. Horn.”
