Announcement: New-York Daily Tribune, 25 June 1864, 3.
“UNION SINGING MEETING.—Mr. J.C. Lamphier, well known as the originator of the Fulton street prayer-meeting, commences on Monday evening next a free weekly singing meeting in the Lecture Room of the Middle Church, Forsyth street, corner of Lafayette place.  It will be held every Monday evening, between 8 and 9 pm.  The object is to create a taste for church singing, and is designed for all who love music.  The public are invited to attend.  If properly sustained, it will exert a great moral influence over young men, who feet will be kept from the haunt of the destroyer.  No interruption will be felt by coming and going during the hour.  All who can are invited to be present.”

Review: New-York Daily Tribune, 29 June 1864, 6.
“The lecture room of the Middle Dutch church . . . was filled with an appreciative and attentive audience, who seemed delighted with the proceedings. . . . The singing was most excellent, and as different musicians are to be invited from time to time to lead the singing, those who attend will enjoy instructions from the best musical talent in the city. . . . A free evening singing meeting can accomplish much good for these [people].  As many of them have evenings resting idly on their hands, a healthy amusement will keep them from seeking the impure atmosphere of the glittering dens where ribald song and dissipation ruins both body and soul.”
