: Strong, George Templeton. New-York Historical Society. The Diaries of George Templeton Strong, 1863-1869: Musical Excerpts from the MSs, transcribed by Mary Simonson. ed. by Christopher Bruhn., 19 November 1864.
“To Philharmonic rehearsal. Mendelssohn’s symphony . . . The Scotch Symphony--why Scotch rather than Welsh I can not say. Very delightful work. No end of talent, taste, culture, skill, fertility of resources, copiousness of musical language. Every movement is beautiful and original & full of splendid points. No fault can be found with it, except that it is without the surpassing--almost supernatural vigor and beauty that Mozart and Beethoven express. It is first rate work of the second order, and differs in general & not merely in degree, from works of the First Order. But the Scherzo is marvelous, and so is the Finale.”
