Overview of Maretzek Italian Opera season - Trovatore, Traviata, Norma, and Faust “have been heard by every grown and half-grown person in New-York.  But there is a country beyond New-York City, and a stream of strangers—called the floating population, because it keeps the heads of our managers, hotel-keepers and dry goods purveyors above water—sets in from it. Italian opera is the great treat which our country cousins propose to themselves.  The operas of which they have heard the most are those which they prefer and desire.  Hence ‘Il Trovatore’ is a never-failing attraction, and ‘Norma’ and ‘Lucia’ and ‘Lucrezia’ are sure to fill the house.  Mr. Maretzek, in fact, is compelled to repeat himself in order that he may satisfy the country as well as the town.”
