“Haydn’s Symphony in B-flat, No. 1, disappointed me a little, I’m sorry to say, for I love to venerate old Haydn’s memory. Rather there were passages that sounded old fashioned, starched [operitized?]. The minuet and trio seem thin to me & poor for Haydn. But there are lovely points in the first and second movements. We often fail to appreciate his originality and fertility – and Mozart’s too – because so many of the phrases they produced have been adopted into the current vernacular of music and become familiar as to be commonplace.”
