“Last Thursday’s soirée, at the French Theatre, had a double attraction for the public; first the occasion to witness a legitimate sympathy toward M. Chol, the beneficiary, then the return of Mlle. Maillet, now Mme. Gravier. . . .

The operetta chosen for the return of Mme. Gravier-Maillet, or Maillet Gravier, Freluchette, is a pleasant musical sketch, which hasn’t had all the success it deserves. Mme. Gravier was charming in it; marriage has done well for her, she has gained more poise, more gracefulness and unruliness; she was is voice and sang well. Unfortunately, Chol was visibly tired; he spoke with great fullness and spirit in all the speaking parts of his role; but his voice failed him, and he had to do everything he could with his art to save the musical part. He makes with Edgard a couple of good sailors, two real topmen whom one would believe just descended from the topsail.”
