“We are glad to hear—and our lady readers will join us in the gladness—that there is to be a Matinée on Saturday.  Verdi’s opera of ‘Ernani’ is to be given.  The Matinée will commence at the usual hour, and end in time for the Philharmonic concert.  It might, however, be desirable for enthusiasts to remain in the Academy from Friday night inasmuch as there is a rehearsal early on Saturday morning.”

Review: New York Herald, 12 March 1865, 4.

“Yesterday was an opera festival. We had a grand matinee in the day, with such a house as has been rarely seen even at a matinee. There was neither sitting nor standing room to be obtained after the curtain rose. Ernani was the opera, with Zucchi, Macaferri [sic], Ardavanni and Garibaldi in the cast. The opera was very well sung, and the audience more enthusiastically plaudatory than usual.”

Review: New York Post, 13 March 1865.

“The matinee . . . was in every way a most brilliant success. The house was crowded to excess, and the singers gave a vigorous and enjoyable performance of ‘Ernani.’”
