Announcement: Courrier des États-Unis, 09 March 1865.

A drama by George Sand, Le Marquis de Villemer, has been postponed.  Sand’s style and language is sophisticated and complex, not like vaudeville.  Hiring amateurs for the theatrical enterprise has not been successful.

Review: Courrier des États-Unis, 11 March 1865.

“The hall would have been more crowded had the weather been less offensive.  The operetta chosen for the return of Mme. Gravier-Maillet, Freluchette, is a nice pochade [rough sketch] which did not achieve the success it deserved.  Mme. Gravier was charming in it; marriage has done well for her. She has gained more poise, more gracefulness and unruliness; she was in voice and sang well. Unfortunately, M. Chol was visibly tired; he spoke with great fullness and spirit in all the speaking parts of his role; but his voice failed him, and he had to do everything he could with his art to save the musical part. He makes with Edgard a couple of good sailors, two real topmen whom one would believe just descended from the topsail.”
