Review: New-Yorker Staats-Zeitung und Herold, 12 December 1864, 8.

“The comprehensive program consisted of 13 numbers that lasted until past midnight, because the ball was lawfully not allowed to start until the next day (the Sunday law had been reinforced lately).  Weber’s overture from Freischütz, performed by the orchestra, was played and received very well.  The choir gave excellent performances of the Mendelssohn pieces, which only attain their required effect if sung with attention to the nuances of the dynamics.  Also, the performance by the choir of Becker’s Reigen from Zigeuner was secure and strong, but we would recommend a faster tempo for future performances of it. Conductor Wenige lead the musicians and vocalists with caution and sensitivity.  The violin soloist, Mr. Träger, did well.  Vocal soloist Mrs. Pfaffmann has a clear, beautiful soprano voice which is worth developing.  The chromatic runs and trills of the Pagenlied seemed challenging for her.  She completely satisfied, however, with Donizetti’s O’ luce di qu'est anima from “Linda”.  Mad. Zibelia possesses a prominent alto voice and, just like Ms. Dudenhausen, is an accomplished and fine singer.  The piano accompaniment by Mr. Wenige was excellent and sounded very pleasing, not just due to his playing but also because of the rich and brilliant tone of the splendid instrument donated by the piano factory of the Decker Brothers, which, in addition, was very elegant to look at.  Mr. Richter’s violin playing, which accompanied Ms. Dudenhausen’s performance, was also note-worthy.”
