“One of the most pleasant of the many compliments now paid to the veteran journalist and statesman, was tendered Mr. Thurlow Weed, at his residence in West Ninth-street, last evening. A few of his friends deeming the successful close of an arduous campaign a fit time to indicate their regard, express their gratitude and manifest their esteem, called at the place above mentioned, about 10 o’clock last night, accompanied by the superb band of the gallant Seventh Regiment, numbering in all some forty pieces. The first intimation granted Mr. Weed of the intended compliment was delicately conveyed in the graceful melody of choice selections from ‘Martha.’ Standing in front of the house the band played for something like an hour a carefully selected programme of the choicest and most popular operatic selections, after which the crowd clamorously called for Mr. Weed. [After his speech] An adjournment to the supper-room afforded an opportunity for the interchange of a thousand kind compliments and gracious good wishes, with which the later hours of the night melted imperceptibly away, until as a gentle reminder the band played ‘Hail Columbia’ and ‘Yankee Doodle,’ and terminated the proceedings by a touching rendition of Howard Payne’s ever memorable melody.” Followed by the lyrics to “Home, Sweet Home.”
