“The Varieties, in the Bowery, is now under the management of Mr. George Lea, who, probably after he has made himself acquainted with the wants of an east side audience, will give an entertainment such as they have not yet had in that section of the city. In taking hold of a hall which others have not made a fortune in, a man has many difficultuies to surmount before he can see his way clear; but if any manager can give a good start to the Varieties, George Lea is the man. Harry Bloodgood may be a good negro performer, but he does not benefit himself or manager by so incessantly using the expression—‘damn it’; he had better omit it altogether, before it damns him.  The double song and dance by Thompson and Kerns, is one of the best acts of the kind we ever witnessed; it brings down the house immensely.  Duverna, the contortionist, is also a good card.  There is a capital ballet troupe at the Varieties, under the direction of M. Zzollossy (sic), while the orchestra, led by Braham, is also good.”
