A review of Forrest doing Othello. “The Forrestian-Hackettonian team at Niblo’s old stage starting corner seem to ‘hold their own’ in harness very well, and the rush of people every night for seats certainly looks as if the public wanted to try whether the new edifice could possibly ‘hold the town’ in a literal as well as dramatic or pecuniary sense. Our assertion last week that Edwin Forrest had improved his Othello caused the honest and incorruptible masses of the people to ‘strain a point,’ and see our truly great tragedian once more in that master-piece of his art… as many people were turned away as could be admitted…. The performance … was much superior, in many respects, to that on the 18th. … All sorts of architectural and chronological abominations appear in almost every scene; and we really do not know how we should get along if we had not the privilege of shutting our eyes and listening to Harvey B. Dodworth’s selections as played in the orchestra.”
