One of the subtitles: “Speeches, Enthusiasm, Music, &c.”  “Arrival of General Grant . . . while the band played ‘Conquering hero’ and other airs.  The General made no speech and remained but a few minutes on the platform. . . .

The Anderson Union Glee Club favored the audience with another patriotic song, after which cheers were given for President Johnson, General Grant and the Union, whereupon the president declared the meeting adjourned.”

“Ten thousand people gathered at the several entrances of the hall. . . .

. . . Impatient for Grant, the crowd brooked no delay, and it was with difficulty that the policeman could preserve order.  The music of the band didn’t please them. . . .

At this moment a stir was made near the side entrance, and instinctively the vast assemblage knew that their man had come.  Sure enough, as the band struck up ‘Hail to the Chief,’ Gen. Grant . . . appeared. . . .

The Anderson Union Club sang two capital songs, the band played ‘Red, White and Blue,’ Gen. Blair retired, and Gen. Nye was called upon for a speech. . .

The Glee Club then sung the ‘Flag of Bunker Hill,’ and the immense audience dispersed.  It was the largest meeting ever held in Cooper Institute.”
