Review: New-York Times, 08 June 1865, 1.

“In due time the band of the Seventh Regiment . . . arrived [and] the serenade began.  It was opened with ‘Hail Columbia,’ and was followed by the overture to ‘William Tell,’ a graceful and spirited gallop, selections from ‘Robert le Diable,’ an energetic composition entitled ‘Rataplan de Gloria,’ and one or two other pieces, all given with really excellent accuracy, taste and expression.  The music was interspersed with short speeches.”

“Not less than 20,000 persons were in the immediate vicinity of the Astor House. . . .

     The Music

Grafulla’s full band, forty pieces, struck up ‘Hail Columbia’ . . .

When the band with thrilling effect had rendered the ‘Overture to William Tell,’ Gen. Grant and his brilliant staff stepped on the balcony and were greeted with ten thousand wild huzzas.”
